How to Rest While You’re Working
We hear a lot about the importance of resting from work: taking time to disconnect and to let our minds and bodies unwind and recharge.
But what about resting at work? Is this even possible? As you’re going about your tasks and facing different pressures every day — as you’re mentally or physically being challenged to perform and advance — you may be wondering, is there a way to find rest?
God has a lot to say about this in the Bible. He talks about a rest that isn’t limited to vacation time and regular days off. It’s something that’s available throughout the week, even while you’re working. He says:
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28–29
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Scripture is filled with many other verses that help you experience God’s rest as you work. If you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed — maybe too much has been added to your plate, or your job is mentally or physically draining (or both) — take a few moments to connect with God today:
- Before your work begins, ask Him to fill you with strength and to remind you of his presence throughout the day (or night)
- Spend a few minutes reading Scripture during your lunch or break
- Then, continue meditating on a verse that you’ve read, and ask Him to show you how to apply it to your work
