Is the Bible Still Relevant?
Whether or not you regularly read the Bible, you likely have one tucked away somewhere in your house, or at least know someone who does. In fact, over the past 50 years, the Bible has been the best-selling book in the world! This begs the question: is the Bible — written thousands of years ago — actually still relevant and worth reading today?
Spoiler alert: I read the Bible every day. I believe the Bible is relevant today. But I wanted to find out what other people thought, too. During my search, I discovered this fascinating report from American Bible Society called the State of the Bible. (You can check out the links at the end of this article.) In it, I learned that well over half of Americans (58 percent, in fact) agree that “the message of the Bible has transformed my life.” I don’t know about you, but I would say that something transforming your life would definitely be considered relevant.
If you’re still wondering if the Bible is relevant today, here are a few reasons why I read it every day:
- It helps us live a better life. In the firsthand accounts of the life of Jesus (the Gospels), we can learn how to love and live more like Him. We can find life-giving wisdom in the book of Proverbs, and comfort during trials in the Psalms. Of people who regularly read the Bible, 41% say that they feel peace because of it. We can all use a little more peace, can’t we?
- It’s one of the ways God speaks to us. Unlike any other book or document in history, the words in the Bible aren’t static — they’re dynamic and full of life. Even though the words in Bible were written thousands of years ago, the Holy Spirit speaks to us when we read them. Even if we’ve read something in the Bible hundreds of times, God always speaks something new to us through it. Hebrews 4:12 says that God’s Word is “alive and active”.
- It’s not as intimidating as you might think. You might be thinking, “I really want to start reading the Bible, but I have no idea where to start!” Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Fortunately, daily Bible Reading Plans help you discover God’s Word day-by-day in a way that’s not overwhelming. A lot of Plans even have devotional content to help you understand better what the Bible is saying.
57% of Americans wish they read the Bible more. Let’s be honest: there’s not many things over half of Americans agree on! You might be one of the 57% who want to read the Bible more. Here’s the good news: the Bible App makes it really easy by allowing you to subscribe to a daily reading plan and keep up with it on all your different devices.
